Engine Idle Speed Problems

Featured Replies

I am having some problems with the idle control speed on my ford focus 1.8LX (X Reg). Have been experiencing problems when slowing down (traffic lights etc) and when i have come to a complete stop (in neutral with none of the pedals depressed) the engine will be revving at 2,000 rpm before slowing down again to just under 1,000.

Another, more worrying problem, is when slowing down for r/bouts. Upon the approach, and slowing down through the gears as normal, i reach the junction and the revs will suddenly drop to zero and the engine will completely cut-out (leaving me to coast to safety before re-starting the engine). I have almost been hit from behind in this situation as i am expected to pull away, but instead it just stalls.

Is this a problem with the Idle Control Valve? If so, is it an expensive process to have replaced?

Many thanks in advance and apols for the 'sketchy' description of my problem (hopefully you will understand what i am getting at!!)

Hy ! First of all, try cleaning the throttle body ! If you don't have the required tools, for the start, buy a "Crabuerettor cleaner " spray can, apply it directly to the throttle body following the instructions ! If the problem seems to go away, it's likely that the problem is there (gum deposits) ! Another thing that might fail is the oxygen sensor !

ok i had 2 similar problems with my car come to a stop my car would just stop, all power could be lost, basicaly it was the battery some leads had come loose soo check that first ok,

more recently my car started to rev it self, up to the 2k mark now this was due to a slight leak in a breather pipe for my manifolds, this was for some reason causing my car to revfor a little bit wen i came to a stop,

i mean this may not be the issue with your car but its best to check if the throttle body idea dosent work for u,

Idle valve, typical symptoms there buddy.

Need to remove and try and clean, this may improve things, but it sounds like its a little beyond DIY revival, could do with a replacement...

Its not too difficult to do and the part aint that expensive :)

Just couple bolts, and a connector :)

Thanks to all for your helpful comments on my situation, much appreciated! Think I will try to get my friend (who is a mechanic) to replace the idle valve rather than attempt it myself (due to time and inexperience!!)

Think that this may be the most economical option open to me as when i contacted my local formula 1 autocentre they explained to me that they don't get involved with diagnostics and that i should contact my local ford dealer (and i dont fancy the idea of getting bent over for the privelege of them replacing it for me, right before xmas!!)

Many thanks again and i will keep you posted with the outcome!! ;)
