Rear defroster

Featured Replies

Hi,

Wondering if my rear defroster is working properly. You can see on the photo that the top part of the rear windscreen remains frosted. There are wires on the windscreen in this area but maybe they are for something else as they are on a different circuit? Could be an antenna? Anyone else noticed this?

Yeah I've noticed this recently, ours is the same, the top couple of lines don't defrost.

It's certainly an antenna. The connectors under the plastic at the back lead to an FM/AM unit.

I dont get it why fit a sharks fin aerial ( The british version of an antenna) then put onto in the glass as well

Frequency bands! .. the higher the frequency the shorter the antenna (usually use a 1/4 wave length), so GPS and DAB need a smaller antenna. DAB is region specific (Europe), so it makes sense to make it in a component that can be interchanged depending on the target market. AM/FM are low frequency by comparison and world wide, so the larger length (window element) makes more sense, and is aesthetically more pleasing than a typical 8"-10" long helical stub aerial like on the Kuga, etc..

Saying that, It does seem odd that they opted to use an area which is still in the wiper blade arc and an area that could have done with the heater elements!
