Replacing Panel Air Filter

Featured Replies

Hi gang,

Has anyone had any experience of replacing the stock panel air filter and box on a MK2.1.6TDCI with a cylindrical performance filter like the K&N 57s-4000?

I could opt for the box-free cone but I'm much more excited by the idea of the cylinder.

I'm mainly wondering if the airbox lid of the K&N would be a direct fit to the existing box,  and if any additional piping would be necessary.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance, Sam.

My brother has one of a similar style which he never fitted to his Ibiza, so I'm tempted to have a mess around with that first to see if it will fit. However it is quite small (his one) so I don't think it will grant me much more air flow unfortunately, so just for fun really. Have you noticed any performance enhancement?

Also, it looks like you've removed a lot of or all of the stock airbox?

I did the same on mine but with a heat shield, turns the car into a racing car. Much better than the k & n panel filter and cheaper.

Though I would not tell the insurance people.

That would be classed as a modification so you've likely voided your insurance.

Yeah I'm very tempted to do this now, considering I would save £100 give or take and a lot of messing about. There's a K&N heatshield for the cone style isn't there? *Edit* Spoke to K&N directly and they don't sell heatshields for the 57-0635, only supplying the cold air intake piping.

And I will DEFINITELY be telling the insurance company buddy haha!!

Towards the end of Febuary I will be selling the Genuine K&N57s-4000 induction system.

The optional Bung for the top end of the filter has gone missing but I believe a replacement comes along with a replacement filter.

So the selling items are; the larger Filter housing lid and the larger Filter.

the filter is in need of a clean using a K&N filter cleaning kit; however I can't purchase this in any shop in Ireland and the UK suppliers can't ship it to me without special conditions because it contains a pressurized container.

So my option of cleaning the filter is non existent in this country; my second option is to purchase a replacement E-9289 K&N filter but they cost 70GBP and I'm not looking to spend that sort of money on my Focus anymore my interests are now on improving the house.

Third option was to replace the K&N with a Green Cotton induction filter; but it won't fit the larger K&N induction filter housing 😣 ive already sold the standard air box lid.

So my final option is to sell the K&N57s-4000 kit second hand for 60GBP including tracked shipping then use this money to ship the item aswell as purchase a standard ford focus induction lid and a replacement Green Cotton induction filter.

The Genuine 18" facelift ST alloys are also coming off in the coming months when the tyres are finished as im not willing to spend 120GBP per tyre replacing them every 10-12 months,

I won't be selling them; just taking off the tyres and keeping them in the attic because the market is flooded with replicas which has brought the resale value of these rims down to nothing and I bought them from local ford dealership for 375euro each.

I'm searching local selling sites for a set of 16" ford alloys and I'll be fitting them when the 18" run out should get better fuel economy with a reduction in handling which is a factor I really need to make note of prior to chucking it in to the corners again because the 16" won't have the 8" wide stability to keep it on the road 😦😅

my interests are now on home improvement so the focus needs to run as cheaply and efficiently as possible which results in a reduction of performance and handling but that's just how it is.

anyway if anyone is interested in the K&N57s kit second hand for 60GBP via paypal including tracked shipping let me know [email protected]

Thanks mate,

I'll consider it sold then if you want it,

Thanks for the offer on the lid but I need to have a lid in hand to replace the K&N one immediately as I need the car daily and shipping from UK takes three days, I work six days a week these days and need the car functioning.

I'd sell it today if i had a replacement lid to hand but I've gotta get one from a breakers first then swap it and sell this one to you then will be the week after next when available to despatch id that's ok?

cool... sounds good to me m8....thx

Cheers mate recieved payment there now,

There's a full induction box coming in the post and I only need the lid from it, so I'll swap the standard lid with the K&N57s lid and insert the K&N filter then repackage and send it on to you.

The filter has never been cleaned so it may come out like new if cleaned,

I'll email you with tracking number when despatched Thursday morning 👍

I've recently got the replacement k&n filter with removable bung for my mk2.5 2.0 but didnt buy the air box lid. With the bung out there is a slight induction noise esp when u give it some revs. Normal driving don't hear anything though. Can't comment on a performance gain just yet  if any but mpg seems to be a tad better.

Wow Lenny I only ever fit budget tyres on my car, I currently have Kenda Kr20 all round, back ones have been on since since I bought the car in September 2015, don't know what the depth was at the time, had to replace the front two last July at the grand price of £35 each and played £10 to get them fitted.

They perform very well for my needs, I very rarely do more than 75 mph but have taken them up to 115 mph, sshh.

Can't tell if their noisy as my exhaust drowns out any excess noise.

Yeah usually takes three days from Ireland unfortunately.

I do plenty of miles around 40,000 per year, work is only 20km each way per day but we go far at the weekends and summer holidays.

always fitted AVON ZV5 stick to the road very well as used by the Po Po aswell 🚔😉

Just out of interest Lenny, what filter would you suggest for better mpg, don't need intake roar as I've got a twin exhaust system and won't hear it anyway, just looking for something a bit less restrictive than the Ford paper one.

The type I have is the big round one, 1.8 litre Duratec HE engine, trying to squeeze a bit more miles per gallon out of it. On board display is saying 30.7 mpg at the moment ( best I've had it for ages) mixed driving, very rarely boot it, normally change up at 3000 rpm in every gear. Any thoughts pal?

A Green Cotton induction filter would be best for MPG and if you can get some NGK Irridium spark plugs for that model then go for those too.

Also maintain tyre pressure and build up revs slowly

So would you need a brand new box if you were to get a cylinder air filter? Or does it not need a box?

You would need a new box for best results, as without a box atall a universal mushroom will such in moisture and heat,

If you have a 2005-2008 1.6tdci you can swap the box for the cylinder housing which is exactly the same unit fitted to the stock RS focus.

a K&N57s can then be fitted or an alternative cylinder upgrade.

I always found the cheaper generic cone filters to be decent enough, they give a good induction noise and think they came in at £12. I looked in to the K&N kits and toyed with the idea but in the end took a punt with generic one. At £12 each and replace say every 12 months I would be cheaper doing that for near on 8 years.

Re tyres, I like the Avons too. They are good and sticky and give lots of grip with longevity being the trade off because of the soft compound. I always liked the ZZ3s. A good performance road tyre. Then I switched to Hankook Ventus which gave a bit less grip but lasted that bit longer. I'm running Mitchelin Cross Climate now, finally in the size I needed. I must say they are a very nice tyre, good tread pattern and wear rate up to now. I managed to get them at a bargain price of £104 per corner in 16s. My personal preference is never to use budget tyres if I can avoid it, tyres are the only thing keeping me on the road so I'll pay that bit more. It's not just speed rating that is a factor, it's load and noise and wear plus integrity of the tyre.
