I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction here. My wife has a Mk4 Fiesta 1.25 Zetec S which started fine when she took the wee one to nursery today. She came back out to the car 5 mins later, turned the key and nothing. All the lights are lighting up, the battery seems fine (replaced 18 months ago) but when the key turns there's no clunk, just a short high pitched sound (not loud) from the engine bay like something priming along with the normal priming sound (whirring and click) but nothing else. The car bump starts no probs and runs fine but does nothing off the key.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated as she needs the car badly at this time of year to get all the preps done!!!!

    sounds like starter motor...can you get at it to give the actuator a thump with a hammer? If so try that when turning the key (need two people obviously!).

    And if you can, check to see if the starter motor is getting 12vs constant from battery and 12vs on the little actuator wire when you turn the key :)

    Again, the Zetec S wasnt a 1.25, I think you may have the Si? Or just a zetec :)

    It says 16v Zetec on the top. It's a '98, sure it's around 1.2 but will have to check. Are these the ones with the starter motor at the back of the engine?

    could be the immoblizer/ecu not reconising the key, if you have spare key, try it with that.
