Hi, my dad has just picked up his new car a 2016 kuga 2l tdci automatic. 

He absolutely loves it and it's a lovely motor but one thing that's annoying is that it doesn't seem to show what gear is selected next to the shifter.

please could someone inform me whether this is just a stupid design or if a bulb has gone.

My 2016 Kuga with 6 spd auto is the same- there are no shifter lights that change with the selection of P N D S etc. You need to watch the instrument panel readout where it is displayed. It takes a couple of weeks to get used to.

If you select sport it shows which gear you have selected on the dash panel but only P R N D otherwise and not in very big figures either

 I would just like to say that the PRNDS letters at side of gear selector do illuminate  but do not show which one of PRNDS you are in,that is on dash board, the light that does light up PRNDS is called a gear light bar.
