MOT fail! Is this bad?

Featured Replies

Is this bad or do I just add addictive to the petrol and give it a good run? Thanks

I had the same issue with one of my old car's. Just take the car down a country lane/motorway. Red line it in 2 and 3rd to clear it out. Addictive wouldn't do it any harm so if u have a bottle pop that in aswell.

My main problem was that I didn't do much motorway/higher speed driving and it causes soot build up.

That's my problem as well as I only travel work and back stop and start all the way and its only a couple of miles each way, iv got a re test a week today so I'll add some addictive and give it a good run during the week and before the re test. Fingers crossed!! Do them numbers on the pic look bad in your opinion?

Recently serviced, new engine air filter recently?

Mine was about the same. Have u got a standard back box I was just wondering as the sports back box fail mot as I found out on my friends.

He had to keep standard one for mot time and sports one for the rest of the year. Other than that just a good blast in 2nd and 3rd at 4000/5000 rpm for maybe couple of minutes should be fine.

Yes it was serviced 3 month ago along with a air filter. Are those numbers bad on the pic?

Standard back box and I'll give it a good run get the crap out of it

 u will be fine. I was worried about mine. The mot tester said let me tell you why it's failed. U do a lot if short journeys. The temperature is still cold after u use it. Don't really drive above 30/40mph. He said often people think because the engine is at running temp the exhaust and catalyst may not be so don't have time to burn off the soot. So don't be shocked when u boot it there may be some black smoke.

Thanks I don't fancy paying more money out to fix this problem as I have spent a shed load on the car already, clutch, breaks, service, bonnet lock the list goes on!

Could it be the cat converter on its way out

On the other hand, having spent so much on it already it would be a shame to cut your losses and start over with an unknown quantity. Didn't the testers suggest a remedy? It could be an inexpensive fix. Better the devil you know...

what car is it, I don't think it says anywhere above.

on my Ford Escort (late fuel injection model) the problem was the oxygen sensor in the exhaust failed. Replacing this fixed it.

A garage showed me the ecu details on an advanced code reader where it gave live readings of the voltage from sensor and how many milli seconds the fuel injectors were opening at what rpm. he said this indicated the sensor was failing (voltage it was sending out was  wrong) and making the injectors open too long. he was right.

All they said was get a good quality addictive, give it a good run and get it up to temp and then take it back

There's your answer then. I don't think they'd have said that if they thought you'd got serious problems

All your readings was dropping on second test. Try adding something like redex or Wynn's. I have tried both before. Did u just start car up and take it straight to MOT. Get car warm first then drive it in coz the second test was dropping on all figures and u was only 0.6 out of passing.

When I take my cars for the MOT I always drive around for a while on the way there to make sure the engine is well hot and I also keep in gears 2 & 3 to get the revs up to give it a good blow through.
