Car has an awful ticking noise when car is cold

I've got a 13 plate Fiesta st, the car has an awful ticking noise when the car has been left knocked off for about 15 minutes or cold, you can't hear it when the car is knocked on it's only as you rev the car you can hear a ticking noise, it only happens for about the first 50/60secs, a friend has said it'll be something to do with the oil and that your engine is cold but I'm just wondering if anyone has had the same problem in the past and know any solutions!
