Car stalls/engine cuts out when MAF hose is connected - runs fine when hose unplugged

Hi all,

First time poster here so I apologise if this is the wrong forum for technical queries. My father has a 2004 Focus LX. If the MAF (Mass Air Flow) hose is unplugged the car runs fine. If it is plugged in, however, the car will frequently stall or engine cuts out.

I've googled around and it seems disconnecting the MAF sensor returns a car to tis default "mappings" - is having the hose unplugged the same thing? I would presume so because the symptoms of disconnecting the hose mirror other peoples experiences when they describe "disconnecting the sensor".

I presume the first thing to try is to clean the sensor - is there a recommended method/stuff to use?

Hi Chris,

Welcome to the forum.

Cleaning the MAF Sensor would be the place tom start.  Something like Halfords Electrical Contact cleaner, has great reviews and is only about £3.99.  There are other ways of cleaning it but someone else would need to chip in on how.......
