2003 1.8 Petrol - Instrument Cluster?

Featured Replies

Hey all,

So i'm onto my second Focus. I don't know what possessed me to buy another one of these when my last one was involved in a write-off collision.

Instrument cluster keeps freaking out on me. Revs are stuck at 1k, no speedo, hardly any lights come on. Indicators still work. Backlights still work. No Mileage, can't get into test mode.

It had done this to me previously and automagically fixed itself. The second time I just disconnected the battery. This time, I've tried a few things and i'm getting no luck!

Wiper motors aren't returning to their resting point properly (this has been ongoing, from the common problems thread it's a resistor pack?)

Car misfires on a morning, usually cold mornings. Once it's been started and got to idle it's fine all day. (Thinking about changing the coil, leads & sparks to be sure. When I initally got the car a DTC was logged for Cyl 3 misfire, I checked the spark, looks fine).
One of the rear doors is playing up with locking. Somebody has clearly had an attempt at sorting it before, there's 2 screws holding the door card on and the interior handle doesnt actuate the lock, havent had chance to pull this off. But could the locking issue be due to the central locking module? If so, how does one go about sorting this?

Anybody got any suggestions for the ICM? A focus-friend of mine suggested his had done similar things and it turned out to be the VSS. I've had a look at the connectors, they dont look too bad but could probably do with some contact cleaner (fresh out).

Just had it through it's MOT, spent a fair amount on further welding & T.R.E's. So I feel I have to fix these issues after i've just laid over £200 into it.

Hopefully there's some easy checks I can do to boil this down so I can fix it.

Thanks in advance, Chris

Normally wd40 would fix my central locking, I spray it on the lock mechanism on each door. Then presto! But you need to do it every 6 or 5 months. But if you look on youtube it would recommend white lithium grease so I tried that and then my central locking stopped working again.

So I would use white lithium grease on the hinges and not the lock.

Normally the 2006 models have the cluster problems.

But it is quite normal to spend £400-700 when you buy a 14 year old car.

Totally agree! I've always had old, used cars. Saxo, C3, two foci.

I paid just over 300 for it in December, and I'm about to approach that amount in repairs / spending.

Cluster came back to life after leaving it overnight, I almost have a feeling it's come on after I've jetwashed it. When I turned the key the day after, the dials started skipping/jittering around until they came to a rest point. Everything working as expected. Rear door lock seems to be sticking, so going to give them a good clean down just incase.
