1.6 Ecoboost DMF Failure?

Featured Replies

Good evening all,

After a bit of advice if I may. I believe the DMF on my 2012 1.6 Ecoboost focus (34k) is starting to fail.

Symptoms are when the car is fully warmed up that I get a rattle/clunking noise when the engine starts up (both from off and when it shuts down on the stop start feature) that lasts 2 seconds before disappearing. I also get a slight clunk (same sound as starting) when I lift the clutch and engage drive going from 1-2 and 2-3 especially.

Car runs ok from cold, no rattles present. Clutch isn't slipping, gears etc all engage fine. No noise if left to idle at any temperature.

Grateful if anyone could offer their thoughts. Ford have quoted over £900 to replace the DMF and clutch so want to be sure before committing that amount of cash to it.

Thank you!

If it is the DMF, it must be very early stages. There is a recording of a bad DMF in:

Also 34k is very low mileage for DMF failure.

You need a very positive diagnosis before spending that much, I think I would wait until it became more obvious. Also check the engine mounts in the meantime. And look for anything loose that could rattle.

One possible symptom of DMF failing is iron filings inside the bell housing, visible with the starter motor removed.

Thank you. I agree it's likely early stages because I only get symptoms when the car is hot and the clutch has been worked a bit in traffic, all absolutely fine when colder. Odd.

Update: had the clutch kit and DMF replaced today and rattle/banging noise gone. It was starting to get quite bad on start up and started to rattle a bit on hot idle as well so thought it best to fix rather than chance it. Much smoother take up of drive now too. £945 at Ford stung rather though...
