Hi, I need some ideas! I have warning lights come on but my garage can’t do anything as by the time I’m at the garage they have gone off. Has anyone experienced this problem –

Ford Focus Estate 51 Reg Nov 2001 Petrol

After doing 10-15 miles fast driving the water temperature gauge rises into the red. It is not overheating, and after another couple of minutes returns to normal. It continues with this yo-yoing until the car is stopped. Then, very often the powertrain malfunction warning light comes on yet still drives OK. Then the engine management fault light comes on at which stage, with both warning lights on, the drive gets rough and I need to stop. Once the engine is turned off for 2 minutes the car is fine to drive but the temperature gauge still goes up and down from medium to high and back again.

Does anyone know if I buy a diagnostics code reader can you drive with it connected so that I can read it when the fault appears?

The codes should be stored and you can buy an obd reader from eBay quite cheap.
