Stuck steering lock after key barrel removed.

Featured Replies

Hi all.

Got a bit of an issue, could be a right bugger but hopefully a solution for my Mk1 tdi

I removed the key barrel as it was failing drastically -that common problem. I got it out ok but somehow managed to switch the internal ignition rod to the 0 position and the steering lock kicked in as I knocked the steering wheel. Stupid I know and I'm now stuck with the ignition rod in the wrong position to put the barrel back in.

Has anyone had the same problem? and what how was it rectified ?

I tried to manually move the steering lock latch which the rod should move, but its not moving back to the unlock position. I fear its a big job  and am already contemplating swapping a complete column from a breakers with this one. An easy way out would be most appreciated.

Andy

Try jiggling / turning the wheel in the same direction as it's locked as you turn the rod.
