OBD Scanners

Featured Replies

Can anyone recommend a good OBD scanner, preferably under £30 if that is feasible?

I've seen a lot of them available on amazon/ebay etc but most seem to either say compatible with all USA cars and no mention of UK cars, or no mention of compatability at all.

i got one from tunnelrat. the usb type with the switch on it (the 'modified' one). seems fine, delivered quickly.

Do these only work on Fords or could I use them on a Renault as well.   (Have both)

Thanks, I'll take a look

The modified ones should work on any car as normal as long as you keep the switch flicked to off. I believe all the switch does is connect two of the pins together, breaking that circuit should just make the adaptor work as normal.

this shows how to do the modification on an OBD reader for extra ford functions. it is slightly more than it just putting two wires together, but still quite simple. I bought a modified one as they are still pretty cheap and i could not be bothered to do the modification myself (although i could with my soldering iron)

I have a bluetooth one from Tunnelrat and can highly recommend it (and them).

Doesn't it work with an iPhone?  I've tried a couple of Bluetooth ones but can't get them to work with an iPhone. The wifi ones work fine but then the phone tries to connect to the internet through it rather than cellular roaming

I've only used it with Android...

Could be worth an email to Tunnelrat as I think it is just a guy making/selling them for a bit of money on the side and so seems very approachable.

Bluetooth adapters are very handy when viewing a car (even if dealers seem to hate the fact you like to run over a car thoroughly). Saves lugging laptop around and waiting for it to power up.

I believe the one I got was the best seller on amazon for about a tenner (clear/blue casing). Also gives live stat readouts, could be handy for recording driving data.
