Turbo failed

Turbo failed last night.  Lots of smoke from exhaust. Engine not  rev past 2000 rpm.  Car ran on the engine oil for a few seconds. Managed to stall engine.Car is 2006 focus 2.0 tdci. 

Have oil in intercooler . 

I have got a second hand  turbo with a 3 month warrenty from ebay  on its way.

Few questions if anyone  can answer. 

How  can the turbo  be removed from engine ??  

Can the intercooler be flushed out on car ?? Been told  the bumper needs to come off  to get proper accsess . 

What if any  problems  can  i have  now ??  I understand if turbo has broken up .can have bits of it  in engine :(  i wont know that untill turbo comes off.  

Whats the best advice. ??  Whats going to need  cleaning out.

Sorry to hear your turbo failed,mine went a couple of years ago.Personally I would of taken it to a good local independent garage.I had a OEM turbo fitted and cost me £1150.I'm sure if cost is an issue it could be done a lot cheaper but I'm happy the car now runs sweet.

Cost is an issue.  Unfortanatly.  I bought the 2.0 tdci as these engines are meant to be bullutproof. Never thought the turbo would fail. I suppose at 150k  miles  something had to go on engine.  Im reading some horror stories . Putting the fear of god in me.  So im hoping its going to be stright forward swop.  Going to be  doing this work  on a driveway. . The more hints and tips  the better.  Ie  the intercooler flush out.  Recovery guys  said  flush it out.  Bumper will have to come off .  Ebay seller  for turbo advised  to buy a new intercooler.  I have a family member who fixes cars  on a daily basis .so he knows his way  aroumd.  Just need advice on  how to make  the  work  to be done easier and quicker.  I need car back on road  asap  as my job  is a dominos pizza delivery driver.  O hr contract.  So cant afford  to have car off road .

All I know is everything has to be scrupulously clean.I think you will have to take the sump off and give that a good going over.Leave nothing to chance.

Just a thought how many miles have you done ? 

Definitely flush as much of the system as possible. In worst cases, there can be bits of turbo throughout.

Allow a good time to remove the front bumper. It took me most of a day.

It was held on by 3 10mm hex head self-tapping screws on each side. They undo from underneath (via the wheel arches), and are a pig to get at. On my 2006 Focus, they were well rusted in. Even though screwed into plastic, the zinc plating on the bolts was useless, the threads really jammed in, and the heads rusted. I had to hacksaw through one or two, and drill one out.

Having a bolt & nut remover set handy (to remove rounded off bolts) might help.

The Turbo bolts are likely to be also very well corroded on, but may be a little easier to see and get at.

why would you want to remove bumper? turbo is at the back of the engine on a 2.0tdci. lol

OP said it was to remove the intercooler. He is worried about debris & oil in it, and I guess the best way to clean it out is to remove it, then give it a good soak with some oil cleaner or solvent?

dont need to remove bumper for that either, just the radiator splash shield , pipes off, 2 small bolts and unhook.

Sorry for late update. I know how annoying it is not to get updates.

Car has done 150k.

Second hand turbo i got has very slight play at  induction wheel. Had it looked at before it went on car. Mechanic said it was sweet. Its nothing to worry about.  Had  intercooler cleaned out. Sump cleaned too.  The induction compresser had snapped on the shaft .i have no idea as to why the shaft snapped.  Car has been back on the road a week. 

All seems ok.  Bar a few  niggles. There is an  as what i can only describe as an akrid smell from exhaust.  There was oil in the cat. When i got car back. It was burning the oil  off  from cat.  Smoked a good un  the  10 miles or so driving it from a 2 b.  Cleared up  just as i got home. 

Every now and then.  I think its when cat gets very hot.  I get smoke. So for now  i have no idea whats producing  the smoke. Its not an oil  burning  smell.  

I dont know the history of the replacment . The induction side of the turbo  did have signs  of oil. Mechanic said its  normal  to get a slight misting od oil. 

Just a bit concerned about the intermittant  smoking and the odd smell. Have  used 2 dosses of millers eco.  Plua  beem drivwn hard.  To try clear this odd amell.then  the smole atarts.

The whole exhaust system may have been oiled up a bit when the turbo went. As the parts after the cat do not get very hot on a diesel, it may take quite some time to clear this. I think vaporising oil (especially synthetic) smells different to oil that has been burnt inside the engine. Maybe that is what it is.

Only time will tell, monitoring the oil level in the engine, and looking out for other faults.

A jammed shut or blanked EGR can also make the exhaust smell a bit acrid, this is the NOx. But until the exhaust is known to be clean, it is hard to make any real diagnosis.
