Clutch/Gear shifting

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Had a large vibration when idling for a while and recently it's been getting increasingly difficult to change gears. Booked it in with a garage and they've done preliminary tests; originally I was told it'd be the DMF, so I'd booked it in to have the dmf and clutch replaced. However they're saying because it's still vibrating at the same rate with the clutch pedal down, it's not likely to be the DMF; more likely "the shaft" requiring a recon gearbox.

Very wary about having my pants pulled down on this one, and considering whether I should grin and bear it, or run and get rid. Any thoughts? It's a 2008 1.6 TDCI.

I've just had this start to happen on my Focus 1.6 petrol. Only has 64k miles on the clock. My problem seemed to start after pulling away from a junction quite hard. Not sure if I "broke" something or the timing was just a coincidence.

I have the vibration at idle, but as soon as the revs increase a tiny bit it becomes completely smooth. Clutch engaged or disengaged does not make a difference to the vibration.

Gears also feel stiffer and notchier, and if I rev the engine out to overtake it becomes impossible to select the next gear, i.e. 2nd -> 3rd or 3rd -> 4th just won't happen and i have to either go from 2nd to 4th (or 3rd to 5th) or I have to wait for the revs to drop and then I can find the next gear. The synchro's say no.

Also when putting it in reverse when completely stationary (handbrake on) there's always a fairly large grinding noise. Obviously reverse has no synchro but it should not grind and whine like it does.

I've had my local indy check it out, plug his computer in and whatnot. He couldn't find anything wrong. Praying it's not a gearbox out and rebuild job... Might just try and live with it until I upgrade, but i'd really like to know what the issue is.
