Identifying oil types

Featured Replies

Is there a way to find out if the correct grade of oil has been put in my 2014 fiesta 1.0 ecoboost by garage during oil and filter change without spending a fortune on fancy testing equipment or do I have to rely on the garage being truthful ?

I used to do oil changes etc on my old cars but age and health issues these days mean I must use a garage for simple jobs like this.

You can ask to see the empty oil can.

Asking for the empty can isn't going to prove anything, you'd need to see them putting it in. Depending on how many of those engines they do it may come from a barrel anyway.

you just have to trust them. Even if you gave them a can of Magnetec or whatever you wouldn't know if they used it or kept it for themselves and put cheaper oil in your car

Does it say on invoice what grade? Not that that means anything as it's down to the mechanic to put the right grade in.
When you do have a service next, just buy the correct oil yourself and give them that to put in.

Think I might have to talk nicely to one of my sons and get them to do the job on the street, that way I know the correct oil is in it. :-)

Worth redoing for peace of mind in my view. I would not be surprised if a garage filled it with the wrong stuff and with the requirement being for such a specific grade (5W20, spec WSS-M2C948-B) I wouldn't be happy with the chance it might be something else.

Incidentally, if it's any consolation about not being in a position to readily perform a DIY oil change like you used to note that they didn't design this engine like they used to either - the oil filter is round the back and a bit of a bugger to get to, nevermind remove without oil going everywhere!

similar to my old 02 focus then😊 the most stupid place ever for a filter you couldn't get a container directly under it, once you took it off the oil flowed onto a crossmember ...or was it the driveshaft and splashed everywhere except the container for catching the oil. 😩
