1.6TDCi Odd Belt Noise

Featured Replies

Morning,

Seems to be a fairly common noise on the DV6 but I can't find a definitive answer to curing it.  Noises are hard to describe so hard to search online effectively but this video shows the exact same noise.

I've bought a cambelt kit to fit next weekend as the car is coming up to 10 years old, but want to try and get rid of this noise at the same time.  Is it the crank pulley as suggested in the vid comments?

Sounds like a belt rubbing or something similar,
Not very experienced with Ford's but if it was a crank pull or tensioner gone I'd expect it to make a he'll of a racket

I've had knackered crank pulleys before which have knocked and rattled, but the suggestion here is that it's the rubber partly debonding so it's a rubber 'grind' (if that's the right word!) when the tension gets to the loose part.  It's odd though, can't say I've heard it on any other engine apart from these DV6s.

I can't see it being belt rub as its done it for over 2 years.

If it was mine I would probably remove the alternator drive belt then start the engine and see if noise still there (probably not) . i would then spin all of the pulleys that that the drive belt drives and see if any problem detected.

Yeah I should try it with the belt off really, good point!

Interestingly, as it's got EHPAS, the aux belt only drives the alternator and AC compressor and has one sprung tensioner so there's not much to it.

just an open ended spanner on the tensioner and move tensioner just enough to drop belt off. will probably still make the noise. lol

i cant watch the video on my tablet for some reason but im guessing what the noise sounds like.

Should try an old trick of running the car and slowly dripping water onto the belt, if the noise disappears it’s the belt. The rubber can ‘dry out’ over time.

So, I checked this this afternoon...  It wasn't making the noise so not much point trying the belt off.  All the pulleys are straight while running.  And the tensioner doesn't have any bounce in it at all - so the crank pulley can't be moving right?  The belt itself is very crispy but will be changed with the cambelt anyway.
