Is your Focus Keyless?

Featured Replies

I spotted this article in Fleet News explaining how keyless cars can be stolen from outside your home by 'relay attack'.

https://www.fleetnews.co.uk/news/car-industry-news/2017/08/10/thieves-target-keyless-entry-cars-with-relay-attack

Focus vehicles get special mention.

Seems the best way to protect yourself is to keep the fob in a closed tin box when at home.

How far can you drive without the key in range?  Better to copy the signal than just relay it surely?

You can drive a far as the fuel in the tank as long as you don't key off

Title changed.

But this is already known about, hence why I always recommend people with keyless cars keep their keys in a tin or other container that can act as a faraday cage to prevent signal relays being used.

Every keyless car is vulnerable to this, Focus is not special.

The Focus IS special, but just not in that way  there would be a lot more miserable drivers on the road if they got turfed out of the Focus's and into an i30

Ah, I didn't know that, I guess it's so that if the fob battery dies the engine doesn't just stop in the middle of the motorway?  Must be a more secure option than that though?

If the stop start activates and you open a door you'd need the key to restart it too.

My car is a German spec. Focus MK3 Champions Edition. The Champions Edition is a (limited edition) trim level that was positioned just below the Titanium trim level.

The Champions Edition does not have the Keyless start system. it does have a conventional ignition barrel and folding keys instead.

About 3 Months ago my car was parked in a large parking garage. When i came back after shopping the driver door of the car was open and the storage compartment covering the OBD port was also open. Fortunately all of my belongings were still in the car. When I contacted the police at the end of the day they told me that I was very lucky to have a conventional ignition barrel. Several other Ford vehicles with Keyless Start were stolen from the same garage that day.
