System Engine Fault / Failure - Changed Fuel Filter & no codes

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have a Ford Focus, 1.8 tdci, diesel 2006.

There is around 90k miles on clock.

Recently I have the 'System Engine Fault / Failure' message on the dash, with an accompanying red light.  Also, when driving.....the car seems to be in idle mode i.e. in first and second gear, its like the turbo doesn't engage.....so there is a real slow build up.  Also going up hills i have to keep in 3rd or 4th gear.....and it comes to a crawl.

So i've the Haynes manual, also been reading through this website and others for Ford info.

Seems its quite common.......so what I have done is:

  1. I bought an OBD2 reader, and its showing up 'no codes'.
  2. Changed the fuel filter - made no difference.  Light and message still showing.
  3. I spilled a little diesel when topping up when changing the fuel filter, so i can the engine a light soaking with hose clean off any excess.  Got into the car, and light and message where off and car was back to driving normal i.e. it was engaging turbo.  Couple minutes later the light and message is back on and back to erratic driving.
  4. Read it might be MAF sensor.  I have disconnected this when the engine was running, and it (the engine) kept running.  I read that this may signal that the MAF sensor is faulty.  Anyhow, i've taken out MAF sensor and cleaned with electrical cleaner purchased from Halfords, and still no difference.
  5. I've added Wynns diesel cleaner to tank and have driven few miles and still no difference.

Has anyone any ideas?

i.e. would the MAF sensor be finished, as it doesn't cut out the engine when taken off?  Could it be glow plugs, which i think is next on the list to look at?  Probably beyond my skill level so will need to take to garage.

any advice will be appreciated!

thanks!

Hi I would try using something like forscan on a laptop computer it might show up codes a standard odb2 reader might not flag up.

hi

thanks for your reply.

In the end, it was the glow plugs that needed changed.

i did change the fuel filter, and took out and cleaned the MAF sensor......but those didn't correct the fault.

thanks!!
