Door won't shut or lock. External handle broken too

Featured Replies

I'm pretty sure the Mrs has broken the mechanism this morning trying to open the door below freezing temps. She refutes this..🙄

The door latch has absolutely no tension on

Neither does the outside handle.

So you can't 'reset' the latch and job done.

So now the door won't shut or lock

Simply bounces straight off.

I've attached a video that will hopefully better describe the issue

What tools and parts am I likely to need?

As this will most certainly have to be resolved today

Many thanks

i can't see the vid but I think it is because IT security where I work (I am at work at the moment) disable a lot of stuff.

so when you look at the edge of door like in this pic

maxresdefault.jpg

is the latch in the open or closed position?

If the external handle is still in one piece on the outside and moves on it's hinge properly I think it would be harsh to blame your wife. I could understand the blame more if the handle was broken in half.

whatever it is, it sounds like the internal door card is needing removal

somtime you just need to re set the latch  back to the open/closed position

Looks like that latch is in the closed position

i would see if you can move the latch to the open position   i have had this happen on other cars  when ive had the door frozen  and all i did was flip the latch

Please note the pic is not of the actual car. The pic was put their on the first reply to show whereabouts  to look to check

Internal handle not having any tension maybe the deadlock is on?

My wife’s Focus has a similar problem (door not securing & bouncing out); it was the lock sticking and not returning to the correct position. A screwdriver could be used to manually move the lock into the correct position but this had to be done every time.

It turned out to be a combination of (cold) temperature and lunrication of the mechanism. I used WD40 Lithium grease (https://www.screwfix.com/p/wd-40-specialist-white-lithium-grease-400ml/46103) and this sorted it out and there have been no issues since (Nov 2016).
