Fusion fuel gauge flashing

Featured Replies

IO have just bought a 2005 Fusion 1.4 tdci for my wife to replace one pranged in December

leaving the fore court the fuel ligt was on, and the digital gauge showed zero, so I went straight to the pumps and filled it up. Strange I thought when I could ony get 20 litres in.

When I came to drive off, I realised that the fuel light was still on and the digital gauge now showed full but flashing on and off.

Obviously I went straight back to the showroom and the got a couple of fitters to look at it.

They had the back seat up, and checket the wires were connected, not that you can see much through a 40mm hole.

they checked the fuses and said its probably the sender.

Well the sales guy offered to have the car for a few days to see if they could find the problem, but the wife needed the car so he agreed I could get it looked at elsewhwere and he would pay, if it was reasonable.

So the question now is what kind of fault could change from empty to full when I add fuel, suggesting the float hasdn't sunk, and why would the gauge flash and the light come on. Everything else works fine, so is this a sender problem or an instrument panel problem. All ideas gratefully received.
