Gearbox problem MK2.5

How common are gearbox problems with the Focus MK2.5? I have a 2011 MK2.5 which has just done 92K (miles) and after a few weeks of the gear lever feeling  intermittently what can best be described as a bit 'Sloppy' and 'indecisive',  it gave up today, in the middle of the rush hour of course in the outside lane of 3 lanes of traffic on one of Liverpool's main commuter routes!  Only 5th gear could be selected. The breakdown mechanic checked the link cables between the gearbox and the gear lever and said that they were fine and that the problem seems to be  internal to the gearbox. He seemed surprised at the problem saying that he maintains older, higher mileage Focus private hire cars that have had their share of problems but not this? I'm wondering if anyone else has had such problems, I have done a search and can't find many references to gearbox issues though its more than possible that it is that I haven;t found them.

As the breakdown macanic said, I don't think it's your linkage, when mine went I couldn't select any gear, it was just like a floppy *****, so it may well be internal, sorry I couldn't be of more help.

If the mechanic checked the linkage out properly it could be an internal fault with the gearbox.  If yours is anything like mine then I would check the shift cables at the gear lever to make sure they are still connected they can come off as they wear.

you really need someone in the car moving the gear lever whilst you look at the levers on the gearbox. if the levers on the gearbox are moving properly in time with the gear lever then the problem must be inside the gearbox.

Sometimes you get a fault which is not common and it's just unlucky.

I had an Escort mk5, the gearbox started making screeching noises on the over-run (which I initially thought was fan belt noise)  and clunking and jumping out of gear. car was on about 80k miles and I knew the person who had it new so I am sure mileage was correct. Just unlucky. Had to replace the gearbox.

Thanks for the replies, the breakdown guy checked the levers while I operated the gear lever and they were moving correctly. I've had a good quote for the work so hopefully will be sorted this week. I think s you say, I have just been unlucky.

Unfortunately someone has to be the unlucky one, keep us posted.
