Brake Pads or Brake Shoes? Confused.

Featured Replies

Hi guys.

I'm in need of changing my brakes all round my car as they are currently just working terribly. The problem is, because this is my first ever ford focus, I have no idea whether I need brake shoes or pads for the rear of my Focus. The car I have is a 2010 Focus Titanium 1.6L. I'm in need of both brake discs and pads as far I know and when I type my plate into sites such as eurocarparts, I get the option of pads as well as shoes which confuses me as I don't know which type of brake part it is I need. As far as the front, I think the brake discs are thicker than the ones at the rear as they are ventilated discs (Correct me if I'm wrong guys lol) and also need brake pads. It's just the rear I'm confused with.

All responses and help are greatly appreciated!

Chances are you have drums at the rear so it will be shoes, but if you have discs then it will be pads

I would say if you don't know the difference then I would get someone who knows about brakes to show you what to do, or take it to a garage.

ECP just list every type of brake that could be on your car, not at all helpful.

As above, if you're changing them, I'd hope you can tell the difference but I guess you want the parts for someone else to fit...

With the 1.6 engine, you should have 278mm front discs, and rear drums with shoes.  Unless it's an estate version, then it should be rear discs instead.

That clears the difference between pads, shoes and discs lol. Thanks for the response.

Yeah I’ll just have to get it checked before I buy anything. Thanks for the response.

Yeah I figured; wish they were more specific. And no it’s the regular hatchback, So I’m guessing you guys are right with drums and shoes for the rear. Thanks for your response.

Greatly appreciated guys!
