Fx Satnav (Non Touch Screen) 2009

Featured Replies

Did you go to a Ford dealer first? Ford has an internal TSB (technical service bulletin) abbout this issue.

Some production badges of the Blaupunkt travelpilot FX units are reknown to have issues. The main issue is that some Travelpilot FX units do not turn on anymore. Bosch (which currently owns Blaupunkt) acknowledges these issues and has a limited extended warranty for all units which are known to have this problem. Travelpilot FX units which meet all warranty requirements will be replaced for free.

The affected radio's are produced between June 2008 and May 2009 and have the following part numbers:

• 8S7T-18K931-AC/AD

• 8M5T-18K931-GB/GC/GD/HB/HD/HC

• 8C1T-18K931-AA/AB/AC

• 8V4T-18K931-AD/AE/AF

• 8M5T-18K931-NA

• 8V4T-18K931-BA

If your Ford dealer does not know this you can tell him to look at TSB 26/2013. The limited extended warranty on these units will be valid until 31-12-2015.

Unfortunately my Travelpilot FX did not meet all requirements of the limited extended warranty so I had to pay for repair of the unit myself.

Hello! not speak English, translated by google, because you see a possible solution to my problem, on Monday I will go to Ford dealer to try to fix it, I searched the TSB 26/2013 and have found it, I put the original link and another to my Drive.
Thanks for your information.
Greetings from Barcelona

Oh you beauty! I have one of the affected units and I knew nothing about this! I'm a 8S7T-18K931-AD owner so I'm off to my dealer ASAP! Was so close to buying a new unit too :-) Many thanks.

Best post ever for me. Thank you!!! My unit failed about 6 months ago and the local Ford dealer wrote it off quoting £900 to replace. Obviously this was going nowhere and whilst researching options to replace I stumbled apon this post, my unit had drained the battery when the car had been left for a week and this seemed to fit the known issue. I removed the unit and armed with pictures of the serial number and the TSB number revisited the dealer. They denied all knowledge of the recall but eventually agreed that my unit may qualify. One month later and the a new unit has been fitted for free by the Dealer. Best feeling ever getting my keys back and not a penny to pay, They did quote £189 to replace the GPS antenna (which I knew was on the way out). I've got a ford one on ebay for £57 and armed with a tube of silicon will fit this weekend. Happy motoring :-)

Mega result.

Amazing what happens when you stick to your guns and wave evidence under their noses :)

Hi Guys,

I just had the same problem.

TravelPilot FX doesn't turn on at all couple of days later the battery gone flat (below 4V), had to buy a new one.

Reading deecee3's post I removed the unit to make sure the new battery won't die.

However I checked the TSB 26/2013 and it claims the suspected units made between June 2008 and May 2009.

The manufacturing date in my unit is 25 June 2009. Do you believe I could still claim it as the symptoms are the same as it's written in the TSB?

Cheers

On 31st Dec my Battery/Alternator Died and I had to pay for both of these to be replaced. I was told the Sat Nav would cost £1500 to replace. I now find my device is one of the ones in the TSB.

Unfortunately the extended warranty from Bosch/Blaupunkt ended on 31-12-2015. After this date it is no longer possible to claim a replacement unit from Bosch/Blaupunkt.

Basically the extended warranty no longer exists at this moment so you have to pay for repair or replacement of the unit yourself.

Hmm. Its quite unfair such an expensive bit of kit, with a known issue that completely fails is not at least delt with at a fair price. Its not showing Ford in such a good light. I was actually looking at the new Focus ST models, as up until this point had been quite a happy customer.

It would be quite nice to know what the fix actually is, since knowing this might help understand the costs involved to fix it. Does it loose its programming or does a component blow.

Ford has nothing to do with the extended warranty in any way !!

The (2 Year) Ford warranty on the car and all of its factory fitted accesoires ended long ago so you can not blame Ford for this issue. As a form of goodwill Bosch/Blaupunkt arranged the extended warranty program some Years ago. Ford did only provide the free service to claim a replacement unit from Bosch/Blaupunkt for their customers.

The problem of the affected Travelpilot FX untis is generally caused by defective components. Some specialized companies offer repair services for the Travelpilot FX units. Repair will cost approximately between €200,- and 300,-.

Hi folks.  I have one of the Blaupunkt Travelpilot FX units which died when my battery died.  It actually came back on for as few days then died again.  I took it to the local ford who were unaware of any problem with these units offering to run a diagnostic on it at a cost of about £65. As this was a week before Christmas and the fact I needed the car till after the New Year I decided to leave it.  Now armed with the info on the problems of these units I returned to fords. I have informed them of the issues and Ford TSB 26/2013 but they are saying that because the warranty was only till 31/12/2015 it would be unlikely they could do anything for me.  I also feel this is unfair as it was the manufactures faulty equipment to blame not wear and tear and that Bosch or Blaupunkt should replace the units without warranty.

My TravelPilot died 6th January 2016 just a week after the warranty sapping all the power from the battery also  :( I did try and claim at my local dealership but they wouldn't do anything,  emailed Blaupunkt direct and they said I could get a reconditioned one through the dealership for £310.

Looked around and found a guy on ebay who repairs them for £160 with postage,  offered him £110 and he said he could do it for £130 all in -  ebay link below,  it says Scotland but he fixed mine in Poland! Took 10 days from door to door but now working perfectly :) plus he says he'll fix it again if it breaks within 12 months!

Item number : 252287579918

Changed my battery as it was 6years old,  and the repairer said that low power is why these units go faulty! Makes sense as it died after a holiday and the car had been left in cold conditions for a week..

Hope this info helps!

[RESOLVED]

I had the same issue, and for two years now, I had to unplug my battery every night and plug it back every morning... Except in summer, when the car remains under hard sun, the TravelPilot switched on as per magic. Then, for a couple of months, I was released to do my battery unplug / plug job.

Now my TravelPilot is again switched off, and remains. As I guess that the heat does the job, I tried to heat it with an hair dryer. But nothing happen. Then, surfing over the web, I found a german site telling the same tip: using an hair dryer! I was surprised that someone else had the same idea than mine, but he went a bit further: he pulled the TravelPilot out, unplugged it, opened the back pane (4 side screws) and heated the space between the metal "floor" and the mother board with the hair dryer. Not too close, to avoid to burn any stuff, and about 90 seconds. Then quickly replace the back pane without ***** it and plug it => it switched on !!! After the TravePilot switched on, you've got time to screw the back pane, plug the GPS antenna, the radio antenna and put all the stuff back.

Of course, you've got to have the code to make it work completely.

I found that running the engine with the heater on full for about 20 minutes while parked safely in my driveway and mine sprang back into life.

My 2009 focus is having the same problem! Doing my head in now! I have another problem which may be linked though. My Odometer light stays lit constantly! My travelpilot radio completed died a few weeks ago, I have found through these forums it is one of the models that were on recall until last year! However after driving without a radio for a week and noticing that my odometer was constantly lit I came to my car one day and the radio worked and the odometer switched off when double locking the car! A week later the radio stopped working and the odometer stays constantly on now 😢 Been like this ever since and battery drains completely every now and again if it is sat for a few days. Please help! I've checked fuses and removed the unit? Is it just the radio causing these problems or do I have two problems with the odometer light?? TIA Rob.

can I completely isolate the radio from the cars circuit to see if this sorts the odometer light problem then take it from there and possibly get a new radio if needed? At least I'll know that the radio is the sole culprit then!

Cheers

Is the hairdryer just a quick fix or once done does it sort the problem completely? Sounds a little bit like the Xbox red ring problem where you overheated the unit to re melt the soldered connections so they create a better contact??

Hi all

Am in the same situation. Bought a replacement head unit from ebay but that didn't function properly. Wondering if the hair dryer fix was a temporary fix or if it still work?

Thanks

Dave.

Warming it up totally works, I sat it on top of a radiator for 10 minutes, then plugged it back in. Works fine now.

  • 1 year later...

The aerial you removed had the GPS receiver in the bottom of it on the roof. Did you replace with original ford part?

  • 1 year later...

I too have had the same problem. My car stood while I was self isolating when I started the car radio wouldn't come back on. Can the unit be repaired?
