gregberry
I'm looking at getting a Filter on my Zetec s Petrol. I have never put one on before, but I have a friend who has done it before with other cars when we looked at it it didn't seem to be as straight forward as we would of thought. I only really want it for a better sound I'm not bothered about boosting performance as long as i don't lose any. I have looked at the k&n filter and it seems to replace the whole filter box but i was looking just to see if i could get a cheap universal cone or something and add it on with a jubilee clip without really doing too much. I don't really want to spend alot because i know i could go and buy a £200 filter from k & n but like i said its purely for sound so i want to find the cheapest way possible. Any suggestions?? poshpawsfiesta
if you want a better sound why dont you just get the ....... http://www.mountuneperformance.co.uk/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=188&Itemid=110 ??
gregberry
That's the thing I want to spend as little as possible! I was just wondering if I could just fit a £40 universal filter
gregberry
Anyone fitted a universal filter for cheap somehow without paying £200 for a new box? can it even be done??
Wilko-S1600
Do NOT buy a universal cone off eBay or anywhere else! There is a reason they are cheap. All they do it suck in hot air from your engine bay and you WILL lose power. If you really want one then get some hoseing to bring the filter down to the wheel arch or anywhere else that gets cold air. The best thing I think in your situation would be a panel filter. It replaces your original filter but still gives you the induction noise when you put your foot down. Something like this... http://www.pumaspeed.co.uk/product-KN-Panel-Filter-Fiesta-Mk7-Zetec_738.jsp hope that helps :)
gregberry
Yeah thats a great help, I had read they take in hot air and just aren't that great but like i said it was just for a bit of a growl when i put my foot down. I would get the filter panel but i have read there is no difference in sound is this true or just a load of rubbish?
dLockers
There isn't much to a universal filter compared to the K&N ones tbh, except obviously K&N research them a lot more and thats where your extra £££ are going. It won't suck any more or less hot air in....how that is possible I don't know, it all depends on placement. If you can plumb it in so it sits as close to the headlight as possible (ie. away from the engine) it will be pretty much the same. Just get imaginative. gregberry
Is something like that easy to do because obviously at the moment the whole filter is a box filter??
harweyko
just my one cent: we are not rich enough to buy cheap things ;)
dLockers
Is something like that easy to do because obviously at the moment the whole filter is a box filter?? The whole box can be removed, the problem would be to integrate the MAF into a custom solution. Probably best to just buy a K&N. To be honest there is little to no effect. gregberry
So if i just get a panel filter that will do the trick? On youtube and there is a video, a before and after with the panel filter it might just be me but it didnt seem like it sounded much different but the person who put it up obviously thought it was so different he felt the need to put a video up. Will the K&N panel filter give me a decent sound?? because i just thought that was a cone that would give it a good sound?
dLockers
Panel won't give you much difference sound wise. Cone will definitely give you a bigger grunt but obviously you get what you pay for.

Wilko-S1600
I cant comment what sound difference will be on a zs but my old 206 had one and you could tell when you had your foot planted that it was louder than a regular one. Ive actually just ordered a k&n panel filter so once i get it fitted i will let you know what i think :)

Lenny
You on commission Lenny? Seem to be pushing them rather hard! I wish I was mate, I purchased at full price and was given the 10% discount code after my purchase when I told them I was doing the guide. But they are the first supplier I recommended in a guide to offer forum discount so I'm kinda proud to have gotten some discount for the forum. Plus I've found the product to be quality, point taken though lol I'll put the trumpet back in its case from now on, I won't mention it again unless questioned.
