remote locking different fob

Featured Replies

hi all another silly question.  does the remote locking function use the same chip as the immobiliser in the fob?

I have a fob from my old car that is going to be scrapped that I may be able to reprogram to my new car as far as the remote locking goes.  but wont be able to use it to start the car.  as the physical key is obviously different so want to be able to use my new key for the new car.

many thanks

No, the immobiliser uses a passive chip in the fob that is interrogated by a near-field coil around the ignition lock. The central locking uses an active circuit that transmits a coded radio signal to the car.

As for reprogramming I'll have to leave that for someone more knowledgeable.

I'm pretty sure you can't programme a Mk1 fob chip to work with a Mk2.
