1.6 TDCi - Any more oomph possible?

Featured Replies

Howdy folks :)

Joined this site a while ago and thankfully never really had to ask for help about any problems, she's run sweet now for past 3 years, very happy.

However I would like a little more oomph.

I already run her on Shell V Power Optimax and a double shot of millers and I find that really helps. The difference between that and supermarket standard diesel is omg night and day difference. With the good stuff in its quieter, more punch, a lot more pick up and starts instantly, love it.

Is there anything else I can to do the 1.6 TDCi unit to get some more?

I remember in days gone past in all me other cars, Calibra Turbos, 200sx etc I could buy a thing to turn the boost up a psi or two, do peeps do this on the 1.6?

If anyone knows of any subtle performance mods I would love to hear about it, I just wish it had a bit more shove, not looking for much, just the same step up again that the fuel gives me would be great.

Thanks in advance.

Matt :)

Thanks for that Wes, model was perfect, 1.6 TDCi 🙂

Cheers will have a read on the DIY version.

I had Bluefin on my old Mondeo ST TDCi and was pleased with it. I liked that it stored the original map within the unit so you can change it back to standard if the car was going into a garage for any work. As I ended up selling my car within 12 months of buying the Bluefin Superchips reset it for me for free enabling me to sell it on to another Mondeo owner.

I think 1.6tdci Focus came in about 90 bhp and about 115bhp versions. we do not know what you have.  Not sure if the different power is just down to mapping or hardware. I have a feeling someone told me the 115bhp had variable vane turbo and 90bhp had fixed turbo but I might have remembered it wrong

There a definitely mechanical differences between the 2 engines, for a kick off I don't think the 90 BHP engine had a DPF so the software is different.  Unlike the MK5 Mondy 2.0 TDCi where the 150 BHP and 180 BHP engines are mechanically identical and it's just the mapping that differs.

Spot on.  I seem to be one of the few who escaped a dpf by pure chance at the time as I had no clue!

Hi Matt.  I remember you; you sent me pics of how to remove egr valve?   I did that job by the way and went well.  Thanks and welcome back!

Thanks for the input guys. Mines the 110bhp version.

Hey Albert 🙂 yeah I remember mate, pleased you got it done. Makes a real difference huh low down. Mine had such a delay and it's now gone and pulls away cleanly.

I figured I'd be spending loads of time in the forum asking questions but the car is so damn reliable I have nothing to ask lol. Watch it break down now haha. 118k and drives like a new motor.

I'm just looking at air filters to begin with and wondering about a cold air feed directly to the airbox.

Please don't say that when you have the infamous PUG DV6 engine, it'll only lead to trouble! :wallbash:

😕 are they that bad? Mines been a really sweet running motor the last 3 years and I've barely had to maintain it lol.

The DPF filter getting hot cooks the oil on it's way past leading to carbon build up and turbo's failing because of lack of oil. Bad design.  Change the oil and filter every 6000 miles is the recommended thing to do.

Cheers Albert. I did oil and filter last summer, I'll get on it with a fresh one soon as weathers a bit better then.

My bro picked up a 2.0 TDCi Titanium Mondeo this morning, we had a little play down a closed private road and the Focus just had the edge lol was well pleased. Mind you when the mondy has had a service and a drink of optimax and miller's it might be a different story but there was nowt in it :)

Hi Matt. You and i have the same make, model and year and I too have been looking at subtle performance mods. I have owned it since new in Sept 09 and it has never cost me a penny other than servicing and tyres....it’s done 80k and only on its 2nd set of tyres so she really costs nothing to run! Saying that, I am currently throwing money at it! Turbo remanufacture at turbo systems, dpf clean with both new o2 sensors, new egr and a full service! So, I am just getting power back that it lost while the turbo was slowly eating itself and ultimately blowing diesel smoke out the back of the vnt housing! I am likely going to have it mapped shortly though on researching it, there are so many options and companies that offer this, I’m not 100% sure who to use just yet. The general consensus seems to be approx >140hp and >300 lbs ft of torque with the ecu flash which will be quite noticeable....that is without any other mods too. Cost seems to range from approx £250 to £380 but having had a Superchips Bluefin on my old ST, I may well stick with that at approx £300. With new MOT laws, I don’t want to mess about with dpf and egr deletes, just as good as it can be with what it has. Next will be suspension, wheels and tyres then bodywork to lose years of being parked in Birmingham Airport multi-storey carparks! She’s due some love after over 9 years of never really letting me down or failing an mot!

Simple stage 1 remap is the most effective performance mod on a reasonable budget.  The injectors start limiting the power after that and clutch limits torque so there's no much point upgrading the turbo (VNT on these, not the same as the wastegated '90) without the injectors and clutch as well, then you'll want a bigger intercooler to cool the extra air...and by that point you have to think about the gearbox taking the power as well.  And tbh with that spend, plus the extra insurance premium you might as well have just bought a faster car to start with.

I wouldn't recommend an EGR or DPF delete these days, a decent mapper should still be able to pull 135-145bhp from a 110 while retaining those.

Exactly on all points! I have heard that the box is a bit of a weak point on them and even though my clutch has only seen 8k miles (replaced FOC thanks to the mouth breathers at the airport meet and greet service!) I don't see the point in making more upgrades only to make it significantly less reliable. From my perspective, I am hoping to see good gains by doing the service/repair work...I wont have noticed the gradual deterioration in power over the years so getting it back to stock should feel great...for a few minuets anyway!

Just seen on eBay that JJC Race & Rally are selling the Bluefin system for £299 with a free K&N air filter too.....might just try my luck with that when the car comes back this week!

Has anyone tried Terraclean or similar? I am a naturally suspicious person when it comes to this type of stuff but the reviews (assuming they are genuine) seem reasonable in terms of improved performance & economy...

There have been a few positive reports over the years on here for Terraclean.  I had my 1.8 TDCi Focus done about 3 years ago as it was a little sluggish and lumpy at low revs, it made a massive difference to how my car drove, it felt noticeably more muscular at all rev ranges and was back to being quiet happy to roll along in traffic in 1st gear with no power on.

I'm planning on getting mine done again this year.

Use due caution on the DV6 / 16V 1.6TDCi with a Terraclean. I had mine done to sort the DPF out and the terraclean removed carbon plugging something or stopping something from leaking oil into places it shouldn't which in turn I think contributed to my beautiful engine runaway that I suffered.

I believe there has been an turbo oil feed and return pipe mod released. We just bought the new version direct from Ford as part of my turbo rebuild....

Also, found this interesting...only really applicable to people who have experienced turbo failure but maybe routine maintenance on the oil feed pipe is worth considering on these engines...

I'm not a fan of Terraclean personally.  Each to thier own though.

Bluefin should be good but £300 is a lot for a simple remap on these.  Mine cost £150 at HDiTuning, albeit 3 years ago now.

Yes you're right, believe it was a wider one to help flow?  I'm fortunate enough to still be on the original turbo of my 10 year old focus which has covered 164,000 miles although that's mainly thanks to not having a DPF on mine!  I've no idea what the life expectancy is of a turbo but I intend to run the car into the ground to find out 😁

A Mechanic suggested that a terraclean might help mine but for the same reason, I wasn't risking it.  She already chugs out blue smoke on starts and I'd hate to dislodge carbon and create more problems.

Talking of carbon...seen as I am already knees deep in pulling the Focus apart, thought I would take the advice from that link above I found and pull the covers to look at the injectors too...glad I did! 2 of the 4 injectors have suffered seal failure! Turbo systems didn't seem to think the turbo had failed through oil starvation and there was no sign of any serious blockage in the oil strainer/gauze on the turbo feed pipe but as you can see from the photo, it's pretty ***** under there...hopefully caught it before it managed to wreck anything else!
