2001 1.8tddi stalled, won't restart

Hi all,

I recently bought a 2001 Focus 1.8tddi with about 145,000 miles on it. I had a couple of very minor niggles with it but they were easy fixes. On the Friday before Christmas I had been driving for about 45 minutes with no problems when I stalled it in the snow. Totally my fault, the car juddered and cut out but wouldn't restart. It turned over fine but wouldn't fire up so I had to push it back home.

The following day I checked the fuel pump fuse and swapped the relay for the adjacent one but still the same problem. The battery was only 2 days old and had a full charge so that wasn't the issue. I removed the cambelt cover bolts and couldn't see any signs of missing or damaged teeth, tried spraying eezystart into the intake but still nothing.

January 2nd I towed the car to a local mechanic for him to check over. He's connected it up to his diagnostic reader and said the fault is with the fuel pump (I don't have the fault code at this moment). He also said that he looked at a few other (unspecified) things but that I need a new fuel pump.

Any suggestions on other common (cheaper) faults to look out for before I fork out for another fuel pump?  It had been suggested to check the crankshaft sensor but as his code reader said it was a fuel pump problem that seemed to rule that one out. I'm sure it has to be something connected to me stalling the car as it would be too much of a coincidence for it to be anything else.

Thank you,

Paul
