Does the radio trim panel from a 2005 Mk2 simply pop out, or is it held in with some hidden screws which you need to also remove the radio? (I've seen a YouTube on the later rounded  model which just pops out, but want to conform my earlier model is the same)

I should have posted this photo as well which I got off google. There are 2 x screw slots which concerned me. Are these just locating holes that fit over a locating pin then?

Nope.
You need to remove the radio first using the correct keys.
The fascia is held in with two torx screws.
