Timpson quote for duplicate key, I'm still laughing!!

Featured Replies

Popped into Timpsons earlier just curious on how much a duplicate key for my 2005 Focus would be. The original works just fine, and I also have the 2nd manual key, but just like to be prepared, I'm just that kind of guy!. Well, he suggested he could do one for £180. I just smiled at him and left, merrily laughing down the street! I could almost buy most of a replacement car for that LOL Curious, do you folk fork out nearly £200 for a key??

No, we put up with one key and make damn sure we don't lose it!

That's about the going rate for a genuine remote key to be programmed tbh. I was quoted £150 at two local independents, didn't try Timpsons but of course they have a shop with overheads so are likely to cost more.

you will pay more than that is you lose the only key!

It's not a bad price.

I’m glad I bought a second key.Car went into garage for mot and posted first key through the letter box so they could work on the car straight away unfortunately left my house keys in the car🙄Luckily carrying my spare👍

Just saw this on Ebay... It's £20! Obviously it would need the blade cutting at a key smith, but is there anything inherently wrong with it?

It needs coding to the car, which is why they cost so much.

The 'handbook' gives really simple instructions for re-coding a new key. Am I missing something?

  • To programme new remote controls turn the ignition key to position II four times within six seconds.
  • Turn the ignition to position 0. A tone sounds to indicate that it is now possible to programme the remote controls for ten seconds.
  • Press any button on a new remote control. A tone will sound as confirmation. Repeat this last step for all your remote controls, including your original. Do not remove the key from the ignition when pressing the button on this remote control.
  • Switch the ignition back on (position II) or wait for ten seconds without programming another remote control to end the key programming. Only the remote controls which you have just programmed are now able to lock and unlock the vehicle.

Forscan can also code keys - free programme to put on a lap top and buy an Elm connecter wotsit - a lot less than £180

At the risk of repeating myself, Ford give instructions in the owners manual on how to code a new key. Why would you need to take it anywhere to be programmed?

From the ebay description for that key you posted.

I do have the original 2 x keys supplied with the car, though only one has the 3 x buttons. Does that mean I cannot code a new key as per Fords owners manual?

i bought 2 blanks on ebay and bribed the bloke at timpson £20 to cut it for me. i found the ones on ebay a bit thick so had to file it down a bit and all was good

  • Author

Now, when you say you bought a 'blank', were you able to program it as per the instructions in the owners manual?

i was yep

That guide is only for the RCL isn't it?  You'll still need the immobiliser chip programmed.  That can be done with Forscan though.

Right folks, feel free to treat me like an idiot! Is there 2 x types of programming a new key needs, or does the 'Ford' method simply leave you with a key that opens/shuts car and starts engine like you'd expect from a key?

just open and shut.

I was on forscan earlier again lol, and for me to do any kind of programming I have to purchase the full software package for windows. cannot do some of the module resets also

My understanding of it.

There are two different programming things you need to do. One is program the buttons on the key. The other is to program the transponder chip in the key.

If you already have two keys that both work and start the car engine (which means both transponders are programmed right) then you can program a new key yourself (buttons and transponder) in the car with no computers or software.

On ebay you can get a key blade cut from a photo. I was dubious but got one cut the other day for £9.25 including postage and it operates the locks perfectly. that is just the blade part.   https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/221428408337

I then bought the upper key part from another ebay seller for £7.49.  I am not going to give you a link to that as I can not confirm it works as I have not programmed it yet.

I got this for my brothers car which only has one key. I believe I can program the remote buttons from the car, but can't do the transponder chip from the car as we only have one working key and you need two working keys to do an extra transponder chip program.

I believe I can do it with Forscan software on my laptop. As I say, not done it yet (and never done any before). If it does not work I won't know if I am doing it wrong or I bought cheap s**t upper part of key or I have wrong transponder chip.  Transponder chips vary eg 4D60 , 4D63  40bit and 80bit.  You need the right one, they have no identification on them so you can't tell if they sent you what you asked for.

I'll eat my hat if it all goes to plan with no problems, but hope it does

my understanding is that for key programming you need extended licence but it is still free of charge , not done that myself yet

so il have a look tomorrow to see if there are any codes around the web. if I find any il pass them on 👍

Register on the website, click the link in the software (on the computer you want to use it on), pop the details in and voila! It'll give you an extended licence file.

I can see why they hide some of these features behind this registration malarky... you could do some expensive harm if you mess around! 😄

As above, I registered and got the extended licence for free, which allowed me to programme keys etc.

The extended licence though isn't forever, it will only last for a month or so and then you have to apply again if you need it.
