Fault code reader recommendations

Featured Replies

Hi, i’m looking to invest in a fault code reader for my MK8 fiesta but i’m not really 100% sure which one to choose. Does anyone have any recommendations?

I hope I won’t have to use it often so i’m looking for something that is good quality but also competitively priced rather than something outright top end.

Thanks in advance! 🙂

Modified Elm327 from tunnelrat teamed with Forscan on a laptop. Costs around £15 and can do a lot more than a generic code reader.

Like Luke says, you can not beat Forscan with the ELM327. ELM quality varies enormously, a USB one is generally more reliable, and Tunnelrat is a supplier that has been found to be more reliable than random Ebay suppliers.

The best solution is Forscan on a Windows laptop, but this is not very convenient. The Forscan Apps (IoS or Android) cost a few pounds, and are a little less powerful than the Windows version, but fine for reading DTCs. Wireless ELMs are also available, mostly ok from a decent supplier, but are not as fast or reliable as USB ones.

I team Forscan on Laptop with a very basic handheld OBD2 reader. The OBD2 reader is convenient & quick, and reads most standard engine codes. But Forscan is vastly more powerful. It can log live data, and do service procedures normally needing a dealer facility, as well as scan the whole car for all DTCs.
