Removing & Spraying Plastics MK6

Featured Replies

I want to spray the plastics on my MK6 Zetec S. I tried using Forever Black but thanks to rainy England that washed off and looked pretty shoddy quickly, so I'm thinking of spraying now.

I've looked around and I can't seem to find any decent explanation of how to remove all the plastics + tips for spraying.

So, how do I remove front grills, fog light surroundings, side door bumper guards strip (not sure what they're called, halfway up the side of the car?), rear plastics etc.

And what should I use to spray them, what is known to get the best colour and end result.

I'm not fussed if it's written info or links to a bunch of videos, I just need some kind of idea of what I'm doing lol... Any help / experience appreciated! 🙂

I did this on my focus a few years back.

Door strips were bought new and sprayed as they just bend and twist when taking them off of the door.

Everything comes off, you may need a Haynes manual or similar to help.

All the plastics I did (well most) were not smooth, they were stippled. I had to wet and dry them all, starting course working down to very fine grade.

The plastics then had a good dry and clean and an initial spray with plastic primer. This was followed by 2 or 3 coats of primer, again wet and dried back with very fine grit paper.

Cleaned , dried again, then 2 coats of Panther Black spray. Left to dry and then a coat of clear lacquer/top coat.

All was done with rattle cans (from a local car spray paint supplier) and a lot of patience... runs and drips in the top coat are heart breaking.

Not sure if this is the right way but worked for me and stayed true until I got rid of the car.

You really need to wait for good, dry, warm weather to spray and do this sort of work unless you have access to a relatively dust free, warm, dry garage or unit.

Good luck
