Stop start - Not engaging

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone else has had it where stop start just doesn't engage no matter what?

I've got a new battery so it can't be that. Not sure what else it could be?

Mk3 focus.

Have you got the right type of battery , and was the BMS reset when the battery was fitted?

Had mine for about 30 months. I live in a flat area of Lincolnshire and travel about 1000 miles a month. The stop/start only works when I have been on holiday to a hilly area. It will then work for a few days when I get home. It hasn't activated since last October. The battery is still the original (6 years old). I don't plan to change the battery whilst it still starts the car reliably.

I wish my stop/start would disable itself permanenly. I hate it.

I forgot I had it it's been off that long!😂

Well the battery was new from the dealer (non ford) when I got her. Not sure if things have been reset or not.

When I press the button to turn it off am I meant to get a notification on the dash saying so? As I don't.

Nope, just the button illuminates when you switch it off. I would take a photo with the details of the battery and post up so we can see what battery it is.

Me too. The only time it's worked was after I'd had the battery on the charger, but like Isetta I prefer it not working so I haven't bothered trying to reset the BMS.

Can someone enlighten me as to what the BMS is and how I reset it? (Just in case)

As I understand it:

Battery Monitor Reset (BMS):

Press and release the Start/Stop Engine Button to switch the ignition on (do not press the clutch pedal).

Wait for 10 seconds.

Press the Rear Fog Light Switch 5 times (not 5 times on and off), then the Hazard Light Switch 3 times (not 3 times on and off).

Wait for approximately 10 seconds, after which the Instrument Cluster Battery Icon should flash.

Press and release the Start/Stop Engine Button to switch the ignition off (do not press the clutch pedal).

Thanks. And what does resetting that do? Will it hurt to just do it anyway?

It just allows the battery monitor to learn the state of the charge of the new battery.  Obviously stop/start puts strain on batteries so the monitor needs to know hw low it can let the battery drop before disabling the stop start again.  It won't hurt to do it.

I must admit, I'm surprised so many people are saying theirs doesn't work, I do very few miles myself but mine's worked perfectly on both a 40k/6 year Focus and a 100k/6 year Golf (original battery on both afaik).  I did have to reset the BMS on the Focus when I bought it as it had been sat for months unused, but after that it was fine.  It's rare that mine doesn't activate tbh!

Thanks. I'll give it a go later today if I get chance.

My betting is the wrong battery or BMS wasn't reset after.

Ok so I managed to successfully reset the BMS.
Haven't had chance to test that yet though.

Here's also the battery. 88cbe6a770cfb2405ac686efba738f95.jpg

Well if I could read the sticker it would help, but looks like the right battery by the general colour of sticker!! Lol

Also that don't look like a new battery.

Also it doesn't look like a new one you're right. I was told it was but never checked until today. Unless it a recycled one out of another car?

It works if you click on the image to enlarge it.
