New Egr valve fitted but still not right.

Featured Replies

I have a 2007 2.0 diesel Mondeo:

I fitted a new Egr valve to my car last year as the other one was clogged up and not working. The EML came on. I ( proudly, as I know nothing about cars) fitted a new one but still not right. When connected it bogs down at lower revs with thick black smoke but is fine at higher revs and it i runs perfectly when it is unplugged completely. A friend connected it to a laptop to reset the EML light to see if the EGR needed resetting but to no avail.

Any ideas? Does the EGR need to be paired with Engine or similar? Could it be faulty or something else causing it? I would leave it unplugged built it will now fail the MOT with the EML on. Thanks ( simple replies if possible as my car knowledge is pretty limited!)

Are you getting any dtcs relating to egr valve? Is your car a MK3 or MK4 ?

I have a 2004 petrol Mondeo, and some years ago the engine management light came on. Took it to a garage, computer said EGR valve, guy cleared the light. A few months later it came on again, but I had heard (maybe on this forum) how to clear it. Remove battery +ve. Switch on headlamps for a few minutes. Reconnect battery. I was sceptical it would work, but it does! Then need to re-enter radio code and re-program electric windows. Maybe that will help you if you just need to clear the warning light. Done it a few times but can't remember when last time was, must be a fair while ago so maybe it's cured itself.

I got hold of a 2nd hand EGR but never bothered fitting it (yet) as it doesn't affect the way the car runs, or emissions on MOT. Unlike the diesel, have to partially drain the coolant, which I prefer to avoid as no easy way to catch it for re-use (it's the expensive life-of-car stuff) and I believe getting the airlocks out after refilling can be a pain.

I’m pretty sure that the light on for diesels is only a fail for 2008 on wards and 2007 is ok. Petrol is an earlier date. mot  manual is on govt website
