When were electronic parking brakes introduced?

Featured Replies

I have a 2007 Mondeo I'd like to replace with something newer but want to stick with at least a manual hand brake. The less electronics and gadgetry, the better.

How new can I go before a Mondeo will be fitted with an electronic parking brake?

I was looking at Avensis too but they went to the EPB in 2008.

Up to the end of the MK4.5's, so about 2014 ish.

If you go BMW anything up to mid 2019 - standard vehs come with zilch gadgets as well, ha ha

So true!!! yet to see one with indicators 🤣

Insignia had one from launch in 2009.

A lot of large saloon cars have had EPB for about 10 years now.  It's a good feature in theory, allows you to save weight and add a lot more interior space without the need for physical cable runs and a lever mech inside the car...  Only trouble is it was originally too expensive for the smaller models where it would have had the most benefit! 🤦‍♂️

If you want something really basic, maybe consider a Dacia or similar?  Even the Korean stuff like the i40 and the C'eed have EPB these days.

To be fair of all the things that can go wrong on a modern car epb is not top of the list.

Thanks for the answers.

Not sure about.....'It's a good feature in theory, allows you to save weight and add a lot more interior space without the need for physical cable runs and a lever mech inside the car.' How can something expensive and unreliable better something cheap, simple and reliable?

It's a good feature when it works is the point I was making.

I don't know why they're so unreliable, it's literally a couple of motors, a switch and a bit of wire, very little to go wrong!

I've snapped more manual handbrake cables than I can count on one hand anyway, they're not exactly reliable either!  Not to mention poorly adjusted drums or sticky manual calipers...

As Guy says, the EPB is pretty low down on the list of unreliable parts in modern cars.

I think the EPB on the Mk5 Mondeo is brill - makes driving that much easier - you don't have to release it to pull away, just drive off

I really miss it as my 2 litre 2019 320M Sport is factory standard - it does drive nice though with the 8 speed ZF trans, ha ha

Apparently it's a very expensive option 😁
