Coolant reservoir pressure high in 2015 Ford Focus 1.6 TDCI

Featured Replies

Hi,

I recently noticed my coolant levels were below the minimum. When the engine was cool I opened up the reservoir and It bubbled back up to above minimum. Obvious pressure in the cooling system even when cool.

I topped it up and since then have had the same issue, but have had to top coolant levels up. I also noticed reservoir looked like it had gone a little black. I took to the garage and they have replaced some parts (not sure what yet), but have explained the pressure still remains in the system and have asked me to see how it is over the weekend. they explained it may be the head gasket.

Is there any other reason that could be causing the pressure in the coolant reservoir? I want to rule everything out before forking out on getting Head Gasket replaced. Been quoted over £1000 😫

i have noticed a slight misfiring lately when driving, which feels like an injection/stopping of fuel going through when my foot is constant on the accelerator.

Thanks,

Adam

Sad to say this seems like head gasket... I've replaced a few on the 1.6TDCI engines for the exact problems you're saying.

I think you’re right. I took it for a quick drive around block tonight 10 mins. Came back and new coolant had spilt out and coolant tank looks like it has oil in it. No other symptoms though (white smoke, white oil etc.)

How much will I be looking at for getting this replaced?

No the ones I've had don't produce white smoke either, I can only assume after going the cat and DPF it's no longer white.

I have no idea to be honest it really depends on your location and what garages charge at their hourly rate. The parts themselves aren't expensive it's the labour required to do it, I imagine you'll get quoted around 14 hours to do it

Unfortunately I have this exact problem with a 2016 connect 1.6 tdci I’ve just purchase privately, so sold as seen and the guys denying the problem, van runs and drives great no smoke no power loss, was fine on the test drive but on the longer drive home the problem occurred, (losing water from the header tank) but a pressure test of the coolant system comes up fine no leak!

ive been trying lots of the obvious parts to try first, so have been driving it around but starting to notice the header tank getting black spots so straight away then though definitely head gasket.

I believe the head and block are both alloy, does this become a problem with cylinder burn through to the water jacket especially on the block as for re-skimming?

any info would be much appreciated

Thanks Matt
