Focus 1.8TDCI P0299 P0380 faults

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I need some help identifying the problem with my 57 plate Focus 1.8TDCI engine. I have an amber engine warning light on the dashboard and experience a loss of power on acceleration.

I have checked the fault codes with OBD2 reader and it shows as P0299 (turbo low boost) and P0380 (glow plug circuit A). There is no apparent smoke coming out of exhaust on acceleration just a noticeable loss of power and RPMs.

Do I need to replace the glow plugs or is this something more serious than that?

Thank you in advance!

I'd suggest it's probably the underboost fault causing the loss of power.  Most likely a split boost pipe, the solid metal pipe at the front of the engine is well known for cracking around the mount so that's where I'd look first.

Thanks @TomsFocus you might be right, as apart from the loss of power my turbo got noisier, sounds like a vacuum cleaner on acceleration and higher RPMs. Is it easily accessible to check/repair myself?

Yeah, fairly easily to access the pipes.  There's not really a repair for them (tape will just blow off on boost) just replace with another.  If the metal pipe is cracked, you might be able to get that welded up instead of replacing, price dependant.

You were right @TomsFocus about the split boost pipe. Although it seems to be the flexible bit attached to the metal pipe (see image attached). Easy fix?

Yep, that'll be it!  Very easy fix, literally undo the jubilee clip each end of that elbow, pull it out, slide the new one in and tighten the clamps.

Don't pay Ford £50 for same crappy rubber part that'll harden and crack again in a few years (assuming rust hasn't already eaten your car), replace it with a silicone replacement as many have done on here.  Just search on ebay, they're usually less than £15 and because they're silicone they should last forever.
