I recently had the cambelt and water filter changed.  After parking it on my drive, the next time I moved my car I found a rubber cover on the drive under where the offside of the engine had been.

The garage mechanic told me it was a drain cover - nothing to do with a car.  I think that is improbable.  There are no drains anywhere near, it has road grime on and a part number  - 9684789580.  It is approx 3 5/8 inches (92 mm), diameter with a nipple in the centre of one side and a protruding inner ring of external diameter 2.25 inches / 56mm diameter.

I think it is a cover from the bottom crankshaft pulley but can’t find any parts on line to match it and all videos start with an uncovered crankshaft bolt.

It is indeed the cover for the crank pulley. Take it back to your mechanic and tell him to finish the job.

Frankly, your mechanic is a w*nker and I suspect it's a classic case of a mechanic trying to take advantage of a female customer.
