Best petrol engine 2nd Gen Focus

Featured Replies

Hi

Looking for advice for best petrol engine for 2nd gen focus

I will only be spending about £2k on a 3 door focus either 1.6,1.8 or 2.0

Tax and insurance not really a problem and I will only be doing 4k miles a year

Thanks

What are you looking for by "best"?

The 2.0 will have the best performance.

The 1.8 and 2.0 are both from the same Mazda engine family - an engine that's been the basis for Fords 2.0 and 2.3 ecoboosts today.

The 1.6 is an upgraded version of that found in the Mk1.

As sorry..need to be a bit more specific

I like an engine with a decent bit of power but also at that age and price thinking about reliability, maintenance and maybe even higher mileage

cheers

The 1.8 and 2.0 Duratec HE engines are infamous for excessive oil consumption. A high quality engine rebuild to solve the excessive oil consumption will cost more than the value of the car.

Personally I would not buy the 1.8 Duratec HE. This engine has similar fuel economy as the 2.0 Duratec HE with a lot less power. For some reason the 2.0 Duratec HE runs a lot nicer/more refined than the 1.8.

In my opinion the 1.6 Duratec is the most reliable engine of these three. However if you want power you should not buy this engine because it is quite underpowered for a relative heavy car like the Focus MK2.

oh dear that complicated

Ive seen other people say avoid the 1.6 as its slow but not heard the problems with the 1.8/2.0

So if I want the speed I have to risk an expensive engine problem..is that right ?.. no other choices

cheers

I would agree with Wilko about the 1.8 and 2.0 burning oil . Seen quite a few of those. I personally would go for the 1.6.
