Intermittent battery light

Featured Replies

I have a 2012 Focus 1.6 petrol. Recently the battery light has been coming on intermittently whilst driving. The first couple of times it was on short local journals , and I put it down to the car having been sitting unused for a while.

However yesterday after about 50 miles of motorway driving it came on on the motorway. Car still ran ok for another 20 miles until I got home. I then turned engine off and on again, and the battery light went out.

The battery is only 6 months old. I’m thinking possibly an alternator fault? Just wondering if there is anything else I should check first before removing alternator.

thanks

Does sound like alternator to me.
Could be the brushes are worn down.
Worth checking the wiring is ok and connectors are clean & dry plus plugged in securely also.

Thanks, that confirms my suspicions. Will double check wiring first as suggested

If you get the battery light come on when you are standing still, try measuring the voltage across the battery terminals.

If you are good at DIY (working on cars) you could wire your volt meter up so it displays that reading in your car, as you drive, to catch the reading if it is only coming on intermittently when driving

I had this problem earlier in the year I took it back to Ford and they said it was charging

anyway there’s a way of resetting it which I can’t remember now I did see it on here tho so someone will help

it’s been fine since 👍
