2.0 TDCI 2003, stalled now won't start.

Featured Replies

Probably not a very new topic, the other day, following the replacement of the auxiliary drive belt, tensioner, guide pulleys and crank damper, I backed out of the garage a few yards, and promptly stalled it !   I just released the clutch thinking I had selected neutral;  now it will not start. I have bled the fuel system and checked all connections. An OBD 2 code reader gives me PO251, which I have read can be a confusing code:  Injection Pump Metering Control A - Circuit malfunction.   How can this be the result of a stall at idle ? And is this the real fault ?

Well, 1stly,  a 2003 TDCi isn't OBD2, so your reader might not be picking up all codes, in fact there are only a few readers that will do, reliably. I  can recommend one from Tunnelrat electronics, and download software called Forscan. 2ndly, if it started easily after doing all that work, then you couldn't have disturbed any wires, etc. If you changed the crank pulley, which is nigh on impossible  to remove without a whizzy gun, did you turn the pulley anti-clockwise at all...                 3rdly have you cleared the fault then seen if the same one  comes back.

4thly, what colour is the cam sensor? If its black then they're known to be dodgy, if its grey then should be OK.

Hi nicam49, thanks for the reply,  my reader is EOBD- facile, a French company, strange that it has an OBD plug and my laptop found the ECU, gave me the codes, allowed me to erase them too !  1st registered 10/03/2003........ If I insist on turning it I can get PO251 to flag up, if I disconnect an injector to test for flash with a noid light, it tells me injector No.1 failure, which is the one I have disconnected !  The program won't do any realtime info, like fuel pressure, it tells me it is a function not supplied by Ford.

Does this diesel have an impact/fuel cutoff switch or not ? The 'net says yes, then says no, youtube can't make it's mind up either, one Ford guy insists it was never fitted on diesels, my Jag X type diesel has one, as you know it is a Mondeo in drag......!  I woulld REALLY like to know the truth before ripping the dash out ! There is a man on Ebay selling Mondeo diesel impact switches with a Ford part number, so who is right ?

This was running fine and just stalled abruptly as I let go the clutch, and since has not run.  Weird if it has suffered a pump failure in the same second.

Hi, I think the TDDI had that switch 'cos it's mentioned in the green Haynes manual. The TDCi pump is all mechanical unlike the TDDI, which has an electric lift pump. Just go and check the colour of that cam sensor I mentioned before you go any further. The black ones  can fail just like that.     Some of the early Mondies had seperate ECU and ICU (my 2002 has ECU and ICU.. injector control unit) yours may also, does it tell you when the OBD reader connects? The ecu won't start the engine unless the revs are a min of 200rpm, and the frp is 230 bar, iirc... something like that anyway. 🤔. Can you see any flashing from the noid lamp? You're a bit hampered if your reader doesn't support live data... I definitely recommend getting a Tunnelrat one... they support live data, like frp, They also support programming your injectors on the early non-obd2 Mondies, and only cost <£20. Have you tried cracking open an injector pipe to see if you get any fuel coming out when you crank?

Thanks for the help, the cam sensor is grey and checks out ok, identical to my Jag, so I swapped them, no change. swapped the rail pressure sender too, no change.

I took out the pressure regulating valve just for fun as it is also a part of the fault code. I am looking now for a means of confirming its operation.

I still have no injector feed. Tomorrow, the earths !  The thing that sticks in my brain is that this happened after a stall at idle, girlies do this 5 times a day at roundabouts and junctions, and it re-starts !

That pressure reg valve you might hear operating when you apply 12v to it, can't see why it would suddenly be that, either. Tell you what, seeing that you've not had any other ideas from this forum, why not post your problem on the Talkford.com forum. It's been pretty quiet on there recently, and I'm sure the mk3 bods are bored stiff with nothing to stretch their brains with. 🙂 I can't stress enough that you ought to be ordering yourself a Tunnelrat reader in order to monitor frp and other live data, I know other ones are available, but these definitely do work with your vintage of Mondy.                    btw, you didn't answer my original Qq? which was did you turn the crank anticlockwise at all when you changed the crank pulley.... If you did, then you might have caused the chain tensioner some damage and the chain to have jumped... 🤔 ....but let's not go there just yet...

Ah, sorry, in my panic I took the timing cover off and put pins in the crank and camwheels, it was all good. the chains are in good nick and the tensioners and guides are all good too. I will give Talkford a go, and price up a Tunnelrat. is Fleabay OK for one, or are they Chinese non-working copies ?  I hate stabbing in the dark at grief like this. And I hate throwing parts at it until it gets better.  If you ever get a problem with a Jaguar V12HE, I know them inside out !

No, go on Tunnelrat's own website to order one. They're UK based and know their stuff. Steve Elmer is the man, and he'll answer any Qq?s promptly. Just Google them.     I'm impressed that you just whipped off the timing chain cover.... respect!

Just thought... Maybe you didn't stall it... maybe it died suddenly after encountering a fault. 🤔
