Ford mondeo TDCI

Featured Replies

Bought a car from auction ford mondeo estate 1.8 TDCI three weeks ago and couple of days ago whilst driving car started making grinding noise got out had a look and then drove again and it completely died on me. It just wont turn over. Spoke to mechanic he said engine is gone and asking for 1100 pounds to fix it

Unfortunately there's generally a reason cars are shoved into auction 😕. Sometimes you get lucky and get a steal of a deal, other times you get a right lemon.

I know I get it through a mate and it's got 173K on clock seems like a bad choice now. Looking for someone who can fix it cheaper as 1100 is as much the car cost me

Engine is gone is a bit vague... Did he give you a clue what could be up with it?

Stick it back in the auction and buy something else...

Mechanic just told me the engine is gone. Apparently the wet belt inside the engine has snapped

Ouch!! That's not nice.... shame you're not hands-on,  to have a go at fixing it yourself.

😞

You're looking at around £600 just for a replacement engine, even if you could swap it yourself.  Naturally, you'd have both belts changed before fitting along with a service so £1100 doesn't sound unreasonable at all once you add a few hours of garage labour as well.  It's simply not worth fixing at that age and mileage imo.  I wasn't joking about the auction, my local does a 'non runner' auction regularly and I assume most others do the same.

Spoke to mechanic today and he said it's the timing belt that's gone

Could be wet belt or dry belt then, but the internal damage will be the same either way.  Have you asked them to investigate further?  Valve damage us most common but cam or piston damage is also possible.

Did you also buy the Astra at an auction?
