Bonnet popping up but not opening.

The bonnet on my 2008 Mk4 Mondeo wasn't fastening when I pushed it down, so I sprayed it with WD40, which seemed to cure the problem.

 

However, when I now try and open the bonnet, the bonnet pops up with the interior lever but won't open when I move the yellow lever at the front.  It does lock every time when I push the bonnet down. 

 

The bonnet cable was replaced about four years ago after the original snapped.

 

Any ideas on what the problem is, and how to open the bonnet?
