Gearbox Failure. Powershift. Any advice please?

Featured Replies

I have a 5 year old car, 55,000 miles on clock. It's a petrol and battery hybrid. One month out of warranty (lockdown chaos) it was diagnosed with gear box failure. Ford dealership said they do not repair and £6,500 to replace. I found a company who initially claimed they could do a repair but then told me due to parts and it being a sealed unit they cannot get inside the gearbox and only option is to replace. I have to pay £5,000. I have sent a complaint to Ford who just dismissed it. I believe it could be a mechanical error as even the mechanics say they have never seen this happen on such a new car before. Does anyone know how I should proceed with my complaint to Ford?

I have to pay for the repairs as I have duties which require the car. Can anyone start me off, by advising what I could do.

This is what the gearbox mechanic has said: (We have diagnosed the faults and being fully internal within the sealed gearbox unit. There are no error codes displayed on the diagnostic check in order to pinpoint the exact cause and extent of the failure.Prior to us removing and stripping the gearbox, the Ford technician assisting us checked availability of the rebuild kits required in order to put everything together again once the damaged components were replaced, but there are none available. So prior to us removing and stripping we advised that the 'best' course of action would be to replace the gearbox at this stage.)

The powershifts have a terrible reputation. From what I've seen (may be slightly off here as I've no real mondeo experience) the fluid and filter needed to be replaced every 3 years. It's quite an expensive service so most owners don't bother which means the wet clutch inside breaks down.

To be fair, the wet clutch PowerShift boxes like the DCt450 tend to be pretty reliable as long as the filter and fluid is changed on time.  Other (wet) dual clutch systems such as VW's DSG has similar service requirements and the same kind of issues if people are stupid enough to not have them serviced properly.

The dry clutch boxes like the DCT250 are dog :shit: though.

If its a hybrid it must be a Mk5 Mondeo

The Hybrid Mondeo does NOT have a Getrag Powershift transmision - it is a CVT type trans and has a good reputation

See this on google

Forgot to say, you can contact Ford ceo uk. Here are details. It was up until Nov 1st Andy Barratt but it is now Lisa Brankin (Andy Barratt always used to reply to serious complaints)

How you proceed will depend on how you purchased the car. If it was from dealer you still have some rights for up to 6 years. The main difference is that outside of warranty you will have to prove it's down to a manufacturing fault - which with a sealed unit might actually be easier. Check on the Citizens Advice website for details - they have a section about problems with used cars.
