PSI question

Featured Replies

Hi. I have a Focus sedan petrol and I put some air in the tyres today. I read the tyre pressure plate before I did it. I noticed that with my tyres that there is a divide on the plate which states that there are different psi's between the diesel and petrol version of the car. 33 front on diesel and 30 front for petrol.

So I put 30 psi in the front and 33 psi in the back as stated on the plate.

But I noticed that my front tyres were at 33 psi before I put the air in today and remembered that I was told by a mechanic that he just puts 33 psi on all of the tyres. So should I go by what he says or the plate on the car?.

Thanks in advance.

My car normally has just me in it, I run the same pressure all round for simplicity sake - 32psi. You'll find there will now be 100 different opinions on what pressure you run. My advice is to experiment a bit and see what suits you. You'll not break anything trying a few lbs either way!

I practice what I preach LOL

The only reason for the front end psi difference is to compensate for the diesel block being heavier.
I'd say go for 33 all round and monitor the front end for light steering and/or uneven tyre wear.

I think I'll do what Stephenford said and put 32 psi in. I do find that road bumps do feel a bit harsh at 33psi. But as its winter I'll keep it above 30 incase of any loss with the temperatures.

Any more than 32 on the petrol 1.6 it feels awful and bangs hard so yes 32 was what I used on my old mk2.

loads of things influence how it feels, tyre brand, tyre load rating, summer, winter tyres

then how you drive, badly lots of speed wound off using the steering wheel …. reduce rear raise front pressures

speed you drive at.... many are made / sold in germany where 120mph is a slow run in traffic....

tractor engine up front, fat gits in the back etc.

if you drive hard with motorway trips and can cope with the slightly firmer ride... 31 rear 33 front will get you a better handling car and better MPG

too low at the back and it can become unstable.... but try 24 at the back and 34 in the front one day and I expect it will feel like a rear drive car

Believe I run 30 rear 34 front, it feels harsh for the first day then normal.....   I don't like bald edges on the fronts, at 34 they wear perfectly flat even when driven like ogier's much faster brother is doing the mastery

5 down, 95 to go LOL 🤣
