Hi guys, im new here, im 18 y/o im from Romania and i got 1 week ago a Ford Focus 2009 1.8 TDCI with 124 hp.

I have some questions :

How good do you think is the engine in general?
And
Any websites from where i can get visual parts/engine parts for this model that delivers in Europe?

  • 2 weeks later...

Eurocarparts.com

looks like they do international deliveries.
Brexit May have changed things but I wouldn’t think so.

The 1.8 TDCi in the MK2 in generally considered to be bulletproof but there are 2 caveats to this point:

  • Sometime in 2008 Ford changed the lower timing chain for a wet belt, the belt HAS to be changed on time and is often missed by garages when they change the top "cambelt" because all the versions of this engine prior to the change over had a lower chain in oil (if you have your cambelt (top belt) done make sure your garage checks if you have a lower belt instead of a chain, if so you MUST make sure it's changed as well.

The short 90 degree hose highlighted above is prone to going brittle and cracking on the underside, which is quite hard to see and causes a boost leak.  Instead of replacing it with an expensive Ford part made from the same type of rubber, there are silicone replacements available for about 20 euro on ebay.  They'll last longer than the car and are really easy to replace, there's a jubilee clip at each end to loosen, pull the old hose off, fit the new hose into position and tighten the jubilee clips up again.

  • Focus built 07/2008 - 12/2009 were fitted with substandard injectors (a bad batch), the injectors are prone to wearing out MUCH earlier than other batches and if your car develops the fault, the only fix is replacing the injectors! (Thanks to @JW1982 you can find a LOT more detail to better understand the issue here)

Other than the above points, it's a solid engine:

  • Cast iron head (so worries about the cylinder head warping)
  • No DPF fitted so you can do short journeys without worrying about the DPF getting blocked up
  • A pretty common engine in the UK, so spare parts (both used and new) are generally easy to find
  • The EGR can be easily blanked off without throwing up any error codes and this helps to reduce the amount of hot/oily gases being routed back through the engine and clogging things up

My personal experience with this engine in my 2005 MK2 Focus 4 door is:

  • 174,000 miles / 280,000 Km
  • Original turbo
  • Original high pressure fuel pump
  • Original injectors
  • Original clutch and dual mass flywheel
  • Just had the cambelt (top belt) done @174K after the original water pump gasket finally failed
