Is this a full size spare ? Also best way to fix wheel issue ?

Featured Replies

I am pretty much a layman with cars. I have a issue where my tyre pressure keeps going down fast and my local garage said it is a wheel issue and not a tyre. They said I could take it to a specialist to fix or buy a replacement wheel from a scrappy. I have a Mk3 Mondeo hatch, Ghia.

I looked in my boot and saw the below tyre, there is no alloy on it though, do they just not include that on spares ? Also is it a full size tyre or just a space saver spare ?

There is also a photo of my tyre that went down overnight. I pumped it up to 34 PSI before a 30 mile journey, it went down to 25 by the time I got back, then today it is down to 7 PSI. Normally it lasted 2 weeks but now it seems to be dropping even faster.

I realise by the way looking on YouTube there are ways to fix it myself by sealing and beading and all that, but not sure I have the time or space to go through all that, especially as I would have to get a jack and impact wrench (I have disabilities that mean I don't have upper strength).

Thanks all.

That's a full size spare you have. You can run with it on the car for as long as you want (unlike a space saver). The only problem with a steel spare is they look a bit daft when there's 3 other alloys.

It's pretty rare to get an alloy spare wheel unless the owner has specifically bought one as a spare.

Your wheel is probably bucked, hence why you're being told to get a new one from the scrapyard. Don't bother trying to seal it yourself, if the garage has had a couple goes and they cant get it to seal, a bodged DIY job isn't going to fix it either.

Just bear in mind that if you put the spare on, you won't have a spare in the event of a pucture .. (sods law!)  should be plenty of Mk3 wheels on scrappy, but as most of UK is in Tier 3, will they be open? Maybe browse the bay for Mondeo mk3 alloys..?
