Radio code for old Mondeo

Hi, I recently got hold of a 2006 Mondeo.  Everything's great - love it.  Always loved Fords.  

I have a problem finding the code for the radio though.  Everything I've read says "press buttons 1 & 6 together and the radio serial number will come up" (amongst other things).  Nothing I see there looks like the radio serial number which is apparently supposed to start with an M or a V.

I've tried other button combinations to no avail.  I have also checked out all the YouTube vids on it

I have also attempted to take the radio out using special "keys" in the four corners, but only managed to get one in.

Any clues would be very welcome - thanks.

    Have you tried with the radio off as well as on? It should definitely bring up the serial number by doing 1+6 together for a few seconds.

    I haven't tried with it off!  Will give that a go as well.

    Got Halfords to get the radio out today for no charge, but it refuses to come all the way out, so still can't see behind it for serial no.
