MK3 Ford Focus Powershift Problems

Featured Replies

Hi all.

I have a 2013 Ford Focus 1.6 Ti-VCT Powershift and I've owned it for 4 years having bought it when it was 4 years old in 2017. I've noticed for the past few months that the car shudders under acceleration sometimes and at first just put it down to the car needing a service but even after a service it still shudders. I've heard of the Powershift problems and was wondering what I should do to get the problem fixed. It's not that big of a problem but I'm worried it might stem into something worse if I just ignore the problem.

It will be the clutch pack, went through a phase of doing loads of these whilst the vehicles were under warranty.

You could always get the dealer to try the adaptive learns on the clutches and shift drum to see if it makes any better before going down the clutch route

Hi,

Firstly, phone Ford CRC and see what warranty you have on the gearbox. Don't ask a dealer. Ford gave extended warranties on powershift cars, your may still be under warranty. They'll just need the full VIN, if you are covered they will give you a reference number to give the dealer.

If you get confirmation of warranty, then just take it in and they will sort it.

Secondly, ensure that the TCM (Transmission Control Module) and PCM (Powertrain Control Module) software is up to date (they're separate on these), if you do not have warranty then pay for a software update and have and get them to do a reset of the adaptive learning procedure on the TCM.

BUT.

Before you do that, your car is a 2013, how old is the battery?

If the battery is getting old, you will automatically start to loose your transmission adaptive learning strategy and it will constantly be all over the place.

Also, once you've checked/replaced the battery, remove the earth strap from the negative cable where it attaches to the body, remove the paint from the area where the earth eyelet sits, grease and refit the earth strap. Also, remove the airbox completely and there are further earth straps mounted to the chassis rail, do the same to those too. Do this BEFORE you start spending money on new internals for the gearbox.
