Oil or fuel in the spark plugs [1.8 mk2.5 petrol]

Featured Replies

Hello all, I recently replaced my spark plugs for my first time and unfortunately ran into an issue.

the second plug from the left was lightly coated in a substance which I assume is oil.

the third plug from the left was absolutely soaked, it had even made its way on the injector somehow.

When I replaced my oil last year I was a bit of a kluts and spilt oil around the cap, could this have made its way into the spark plugs?

I've heard the rocker cover can often be the culprit but I can't see any evidence of this from a short visual inspection of the top.

My question is, should I worry about this?

If it was petrol you would smell it and it would evaporate. From what you say it appears that the oil is on the outside of the spark plug therefore you must have an oil leak somewhere, surely you cleaned the oil that you spilt straight away, and whilst you shouldn't worry about it you should be concerned until you know where it's coming from and all oil leaks need rectifying as soon as possible if only to stop it making a mess of the engine. A photo would help otherwise it's like saying ' how long is a piece of string'.

Thanks, I'll take it to a garage and see what they think.
